Most people are able to learn to play an instrument to a reasonable standard, the skills can be learnt as can pitch and reading of music score, the thing you mus add to this is a degree of dedication, as whilst you can get away with only playing very rarely once you can already play, when you are learning a degree of practice is required, otherwise your learning curve may be too slow and you lose interest and therefore the motivation to continue. When many people learn to play the guitar they have aspirations of becoming a rock star, however just 15 minutes practice can make your fingers very sore to start with, so again this is something which you must build up over time. I can’t make you practice, in fact I don’t want to, but I hope to give you a few pointers here which make your musical career a little bit easier.
Watch the experts. If you want to be in a rock band watch Slash or Mark Knopfler, depending on the style you want to play of course, however if you want to play classical music have a browse on you tube, whichever style you want to play watch the professionals at work, and see what they do with the fingers on both hands, both holding and plicking or strumming the strings, you can learn quite a lot from watching.
Learn about your instrument, what are the components which make it? What do each of them actually do? Can you
replace them yourself? What maintenance can you do yourself and what should be done by an expert?
Have a look at the free guitar lessons available on the internet, there are plenty of them, from a guy in his bedroom recording it for youtube, through to real professional lessons.
Playing to your stereo. Put on some tracks that you like and jam along, don’t worry nobody’s listening, be creative, try different styles and just enjoy it. I often do this with an old classical guitar which I keep by my chair in the living room, it drives the OH mad, so it’s well worth it
Practice, unfortunately you do need to put in the time to learn, when you first start everything will seem difficult, so just focus on a couple of techniques and get them up to a decent standard, as soon as you do start mastering them, you will get a real boost in confidence and you can of course move on to learning the next skill, the more you learn the wider your repertoire will become and you’ll be rocking out as a member of a band in no time.
earn barre chords and open ones, the differing sound which can be achieved by utilising different types of chords is astounding, particularly when you play classical styles, so it’s worth putting in the time to learn a minimum of two variants of each chord.
Get in the habit of only pressing the strings as hard as is necessary, this will in time lead to less hand fatigue but will also allow you to play for longer before your finger tips toughen up a bit.
Whilst this isn’t going to be enough for you to start a band in the next few weeks, it should allow you to get started with your adventure into the world of a musician, it’s a frustrating, hard but ultimately very rewarding thing to do, so don’t give up at the first sign of a tricky chord, be persistent and in time you will start to get better and better, as you do you will be more inclined to practice for longer too.
I remember when I first started playing, I hated to play an F, it’s the first basic barre chord which most guitarists have to learn, I started to skip the songs which used it (and believe me that’s quite a few) until eventually I decided to sit down and practice going to F from each other chord, then back out again, I did this for probably6 10-15 minutes each night for a week, and by the end of the week I was much more comfortable using it, now I don’t even consider it let alone think of it as a problem, so keep practising!
Once you join a band, from wedding bands to corporate entertainment bands, and all types of function bands, or if you are very lucky you might just be a member of the next big pop band to hit the charts. Either way, pop bands and wedding bands, keep practising, all the bands for hire are excellent musicians and they didn’t get that way watching somebody else play. I know your long term goal may not to be playing wedding music in a party band, but if you can’t be a pop star it’s a good way of making a good living from your music.
